Okiayu-san at Yaoi-Con [Nov. 3rd, 2010|12:18 pm]

[mood |sleepysleepy]

Not sure when I'll be up to writing a full-blown report but thought I'd share some tidbits from throughout the weekend. I will say that of any Japanese guest I've seen at a con, Okiayu was the most open and direct with his answers.

1. The seiyuu Okiayu most likes to work with are Onosaka, Morikawa and Midorikawa (and one more I forgot). Kiuchi said he really likes working with Okiayu, but is surprised he's so hard to travel with (we never did find out what he meant by that).

2. The seiyuu that he looks up to, and who he credits with inspiring him to become a seiyuu are Inoue Kazuhiko, Shiozawa Kaneto and Tanaka Hideyuki.

3. He'd like to get into doing sound effects. (Kiuchi says he's quite good at them. I'd agree.)

4. If he weren't a seiyuu, he could see himself as a kindergarden teacher. (Awwww.)

5. He does not smoke.

6. He seems to really regret that the roles he tends to get are the silent type (Byakuya, Tezuka). When we told him we joke that the animators can only afford a few lines from him, he pointed out that he gets paid the same no matter how much he says, and that there's sometimes resentment that he says so little, but gets paid so well.

7. He no longer really needs to audition much; he tends to get hand-picked for roles.

8. He asked us if we get into characters because of their looks … or their voices. We told him that while we do like attractive characters, it's the voice that matters.

9. He and Kiuchi bought an adorable jack o' lantern face made of sourdough bread for the lucky ladies who had brunch with them. It was very, very sweet of them. ^_^

10. Yes, we really did auction off Okiayu's hoodie cardigan for $800. The new owner is ecstatic and may have, in fact, worn said cardigan home on the plane. He's completely flabbergasted, since he thought it might go for $100. (Okiayu got one embarrassing pic of the new owner in it late Saturday night, while her cheeks were stuffed with food. >_<). He proceeded to wear a pink cardigan for the rest of the weekend.

11. While he finds it too embarrassing to go back and listen to his older roles, he does like to listen to old anime and pick out the seiyuu who were unknown then, but are famous now. He's apparently very good at it.

12. He talked about cosplaying as Akuram for a satellite TV show. It's the only time he's really dressed up as a character. Kiuchi had seen the TV show too and was … not sure what to think. Heh.

13. He would like to visit the eastern part of the U.S., and Kiuchi feels Okiayu should go to Otakon. We can cross our fingers it happens at some point.

14. All those costume changes during live events are quite intentional, and his doing. He decided at some point that the changes would be his "thing" for live shows.

15. When asked when Tezuka would be getting his "Valentine Kiss" single, he said he was waiting for it to happen, but that as long as the manga (and potentially any TV series) was ongoing, the powers that be felt it would be too out of character for Tezuka to sing it. We were all "but *Atobe* got to do one!" and he made a joking, dismissive gesture, as if to say, "It's okay for *Atobe* to sing such a thing." We all cracked up, needless to say!

16. He really likes to shop for shoes. He bought a couple of awesome pairs of black leather shoes (one with embossed dragons, one with gold crosses – think New Orleans Saints' emblem) while in San Francisco.

17. He did not wear anything flowery the entire weekend (just lots of black, and lots of leather), so he cracked up when we were going over the questions for the panel and we got to one about his many flowery shirts. (Which didn't make it into the panel, alas. I wanted to hear his answer.)

18. He did three voices for the panel – Jinnai's evil laugh (by prior request), Tezuka (by the audience's request) and Usamimi (all on his own). Jinnai's laugh is still awesome after all these years.

19. He likes voicing Usamimi because of the kinda perverted bunny outfit he wears. XDDDDD

20. As to what he sounds like in person … if you've ever listened to a free talk on any of his drama CDs, that's his regular voice. It's very pleasant indeed.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the con to see Okiayu and Kiuchi. Everyone was very polite and well-behaved, which made my work easier – thank you! ^_^

They seemed to have a good time, which makes me happy, and grateful we were able to bring them over.

doubtful, as otakon tends to focus on bringing people that haven't come to an american con before. Same goes for their musical guests.

Yes, they say that, but it didn't stop them from bringing Seki Tomokazu in the year after he was at AX.

It's mine as well (which is actually why Kiuchi suggested it, heh).

Thanks for the great report! It is so interesting to read! ^ ^
I would also like to know more personal impressions)

4. If he weren't a seiyuu, he could see himself as a kindergarden teacher. (Awwww.)

I think he would have obtained it)))

Thank you so much for sharing it with us! My love for Okuayu-sama grew even bigger (I did not think it could happen XD). The most epic is his own choice for voice: Usamimi. XD And his reasoning for loving this character. OMG He has such a great sense of humour. :3

I wish I could have been there - but SF is a bit far from Europe. ^^

Still wish I could have been there. It'd be great if he came to another US con. I'd definitely have to make it happen (California was just too far away and too expensive by the time I found out he was going x_x ). Thanks for sharing this bit with us. Glad it sounds like he had fun and was at ease among fans here.

Honestly, just reading this report made me want to say, "awwwww <3" out loud. Except for the fact that I would get very odd looks... :)

Thanks for sharing with us these interesting tidbits.

Ah ! I remember him mentioning he originally wanted to be a kindergarten teacher in an old E.M.U video. He said he loved kids. Guess things haven't changed much in the last 15 years.

And I am so envious of the attendees getting to hear Jinnai's laugh live. If I had one voice request it would be that one. No video I suppose?

I also read that he and Kiuchi auctioned themselves off for laughs and went for $11,000 as a pair. Is there any truth to that?

Thanks for the report !

No video, at their request. And, yep Jinnai's laugh would have been my top choice, though it made me really happy to hear Usamimi's "Kikoeru, kikoeru." and "Ikemen beeeeeam!" too!

I really hope he enjoyed his first U.S. trip and will come back (many, many times!). He seemed to be having a pretty good time. I still can't believe he and Kiuchi-san put themselves up for sale at the bishie auction. o_O

I was a little surprised at how hung up he was on his characters not having many lines. He does play more talkative characters (maybe like Shigure and Akio?), even though no one seems to bring them up... and apparently he doesn't either.

Also, he has a really cool-looking signature. No idea how that is his name, but I will treasure it forever. ^_^v

I agree its sad that one ever seems to notice he plays way more talkative characters. His serious roles are ok but far from showcasing his real talent IMO. All my favourite roles of his are comical ones, or at least multi-faceted ones.

I can imagine it must get frustrating getting cast over and over again in roles that don't say much. He did say it makes it hard to get the character's personality down when he doesn't ha e many lines.

While my favourite character of his is a serious one -- Treize -- I do prefer his comedic roles. He's so very good at them -- Koinosuke, Tiger's Eye, Fuuma Kotarou, Shigure, Jinnai.....

Yes, me too! I mean, I can't resist his sexy evil voice, but I love him most for roles like K, Tiger's Eye, and Akio.

Awesome report! And he looks great for his age, never mind that he admits how old he is. XD At the opening ceremony, my friend who went with me thought he was in his late 20s after telling her to guess how old he looks. Plus, his cuff links at the seiyuu panel were so sparkly! :D

Okki doing the Jinnai laugh was amazing! He still has it in him after all these years! I truly hope he'll come back, and visit the eastern side next time.

Thanks for sharing the neat report!
